A Message from Rabbi Corber
Shalom Beit Rayim Family,
As you know, following the advice of medical professionals and the Rabbinical Assembly, the Executive and I have determined that it is currently not safe to gather for prayers on Shabbat. This is a very hard reality for me as I’m sure it is for many of you as well. Now, more than ever, we need to feel a sense connectedness to one another. We need to feel a sense of belonging and meaning. We need to come together to connect to our Creator. Now, more than ever, we need prayer. For this reason, I have determined that not only is it permissible by Jewish Law for us to use our computers or smartphones to produce and access a live-stream of Shabbat prayers, it is mandated. While the use of electricity on Shabbat is prohibited by most Rabbis, there are minority rulings which are far more lenient. Many of you know that as a Shomer Shabbat Jew, I refrain from using electric devices on Shabbat and am uncomfortable doing so. However when there is an urgent need, I will do so without hesitation. For those who are interested in knowing the thought process behind this decision, I have attached a written responsum (Rabbinic ruling) which you can read. For those who are nevertheless uncomfortable using electric devices on Shabbat and need some advice on how to pray alone, I have attached another document with my guidance.
My advice to everyone, whether you will be joining the livestream or not and whether your camera will be on or off, is that you wear nice clothes on Shabbat evening and morning. Make yourself something delicious. Feel fancy. As I have said before, and as I will continue to repeat, it is important for you to do as many things as possible which bring you comfort and a sense of normality. Please continue to be safe. Stay strong, and please reach out to me if you need ANYTHING!
